A sizable decline in bond yields overnight helped bitcoin BTC$84,117.13 to early gains on Tuesday, but that’s reversed in late-morning U.S.

Treasury yield is now higher by 3 basis points to 5.27%, the strongest level since the first half of 2007.

The 30-year yield is up 3.3 basis points to 5.60%, its highest level since 2004.

That’s helped send bitcoin lower by about $1,000 from its session high, now trading at $83,400, down marginally over the past 24 hours.

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index tumbled 6.7 points to 81.9 this month from 88.6 previously.

Economist forecasts had been for a slight rise to 89, but sharp gains in interest rates and prices at the pump appear to have foiled that outlook.

It was the weakest headline reading since April 2014.

The Expectations Index fell 5.9 points to 63.6 — the third consecutive monthly decline.
